When I first heard of the prospect of going to Alaska to do a show on how people survive and cope with such a brutal climate I thought, "Wow this should be interesting.... maybe, just maybe I could relate to these people; after all I am foolish enough to stand in a hurricane right?"
Then the reality of traveling to a place where temps in the single digits and a state that is dissected by the Arctic Circle set in. And by the way those temps are afternoon highs. No direct flights, no peanuts and a quick turnaround after being whisked 15 hours away from TWC by air. Like a trip to cover a major storm, this required the special BIG Cantore bag and all the layers I could muster. I was going to be in below zero wind chills all day (and you thought my travel was glamorous, right?).
I learned a few fascinating facts about our 49th state along the way. Did you know the you can put 425 Rhode Islands in Alaska? And if you superimpose the state across the lower 48, it would extend from the East Coast to the West Coast. Wow!
Alaska was an amazing place to visit and there's so much to learn and enjoy related to the great state. To learn more, catch my special, Cantore Stories: On Top of the World, premiering November 10 at 10pm Eastern here on The Weather Channel.
And blog with me about my experiences there. Submit your questions here online, and we may use them on-air. And log onto weather.com/tv for a sneak peek of clips from my special report, again premiering November 10.
